SPORT AT OTUMOETAI PRIMARY
Otumoetai Primary places a strong emphasis on physical education and physical activity. There are many opportunities for children to engage in both curriculum based and extra-curricular activities. There are two ways that students can represent the school: in a school team, or an inter-school team.
School Teams
School teams from Years 1-6 represent OPS either after school or on Saturdays. Teams are put together by the Sports Coordinator based on the year levels of students. If possible, teams stay together from an early age to allow students and parents to get to know one another, and for coaches and managers to create a cohesive team. The emphasis for our school teams is to grow our players skills, game sense, and positive attitudes toward sport. For a breakdown of when these sports are played, please see the table below:
Terms 1 & 4 |
Kiwitag, Rippa Rugby, Volleyball, Flippaball |

Teams have four players on the court at a time, but we recommend teams of six players, with players rotating on and off the court. The ball used is specially designed for young volleyballers, it is softer and lighter so easy for young players to manage.
Years three & four
Year three & four teams are only allowed two contacts to return the ball over the net. One catch and one hit (it must be in that order). The same player cannot make both contacts.
Year three & four teams will rotate at the completion of every rally.
The service is made by the team who won the previous point. The server must be more than one metre from the net.
Years five & six
There are three hits per team, the ideal sequence is…….Pass, Set, Spike. A ball passed to a teammate may be caught and immediately thrown (rather than hit). The contact that plays the ball over the net (usually the 3rd contact) MUST be hit. The ball can be hit with ANY part of the body. Players rotate in a clockwise direction when the serve has been won off the opposition team. After five serves from one player, the team must rotate. A point is scored every rally.
